Fundraising

We raise £10,000 a year from three events;- Woodley 10K Road Race, Woodley Carnival BBQ & Rivermead Fireworks. Any volunteers please contact Ted Wingrove at [email protected]

It has been our philosophy to raise money by organising large events rather than doing smaller ones. We have been able to purchase large items like a minibus & trailer and pay for refurbishments to the Scout HQ. In recent years it has also been necessary to subsidise the cost of subscriptions to over 100 young Beavers, Cubs & Scouts.

WOODLEY ROAD RACES – Sunday 11th May 2014  www.woodley10k.co.uk.

This event is sponsored by MCH Vehicle Hire (www.mchvehiclerental.co.uk) and Mizuno Sports.

It combines a 10 kilometre (just over 6 miles)road race round Woodley for adults, a junior 3 kilometre road race for children aged 11-16, and children’s novelty races in Woodford Park. We have about 800 runners in the 10K, 100 juniors in the 3K, and 50 children in the novelty races.

Marshals are required to help direct the runners around the course and to man the water stations at three points around the course:- Tippings Lane, Wokingham Road, and outside the Good Companions Pub in Loddon Bridge Road. We also need helpers to hand out the medals, goody bags and drinks at the finish. We are also looking for Traffic Management Marshals prepared to be trained to control traffic at roundabouts and major junctions. These marshals will receive an accreditation certificate that will enable them to assist in other events with a Traffic Management Order.

WOODLEY CARNIVAL –  June 2014      www.woodleycarnival.org.uk

This event is organised by the Woodley Carnival Committee in Woodford Park and we raise £2,000. We provide the main BBQ and sell around 800 burgers and sausages between 12 noon and 10pm, when the fireworks are set off. Volunteers are requested to help cook, prepare and serve the food, and of course take the money. We have our own large BBQs, bain marie (hostess trolley) and gazebos. We ask volunteers to work for at least a couple of hours before swopping with the next team of helpers. Help is required to help set up the stall in the morning and take it back down later.

RIVERMEAD FIREWORKS – November 2014

This event is run in conjunction with Rivermead School PTA. It is held on the school playing fields in Loddon Bridge Road. The fireworks are supplied and let off by a trained pyrotechnic and helpers from 2nd Abingdon Sea Scouts. Why, because the pyrotechnic is the brother of our Chairman and was the Group Scout Leader of 2nd Abingdon, plus we help with their firework display the following day. This raises around £4,000, depending on the weather, which we share with the school PTA.

Volunteers are needed to man the barrier to keep the spectators safe, to sell glow products, and to cook and sell the 300 burgers and sausages, which are the 1st Woodley trade mark. The event opens at 6.30pm and is cleared by 8.30pm. Very hectic, but you get a free family ticket to watch the fireworks.

REMEMBER: SUBS WOULD HAVE TO  DOUBLE WITHOUT THE FUNDRAISING
